SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 6, 2023) – Beginning Sept. 8 through Nov. 19, a section of Floyd Curl Drive at the intersection of Wurzbach Road will be closed for construction. The partial road closure will start at 6 p.m. on Friday and will impact commuters and pedestrians traveling to multiple UT Health San Antonio buildings and services.
Construction will affect the Medical Arts & Research Center (MARC), the Center for Oral Health Care & Research (COHCR), the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio, Barshop Institute, Biggs Institute, Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute (GCCRI), McDermott Building, Research Administration Building (RAB), School of Public Health and South Texas Research Facility (STRF).
The one-block road closure is part of the institution’s construction site and the installation of a state-of-the-art sky bridge, connecting the Mays Cancer Center to the Multispecialty and Research Hospital. Weighing 360,800 pounds, the sky bridge will be built on site for the next three months. Once the sky bridge is completed and installed, it will be approximately the length of 1.4 football fields or about two city blocks.
The sky bridge will serve as a walkway for patients, and a pathway for data to move from one building to the other. High-tech capabilities include a vacuum tube system, as seen at bank drive-thrus, enabling lab samples to be delivered safely, securely and quickly between the hospital and Cancer Center.
“The construction of the sky bridge is a milestone for our institution,” said William Henrich, MD, MACP, president of UT Health San Antonio. “This moment means we are closer to the opening of our new hospital, and we are bridging the opportunity to inspire hope and healing for our patients and their families.”
Parking at Garage C and Lots 19, 19A, 20 and 21 on the Greehey Campus will only be accessible through the Mays Cancer Center entrance at Wurzbach Road. Free parking will be available for the duration of the construction. However, the dates could vary several weeks after the start date or before the end date.
Alternate routes to UT Health San Antonio buildings and services are recommended for commuters. Patients are advised to plan for additional travel time to their appointments.
